Kelly Wheeler

Hi My name is Kelly Wheeler.
I am doing a Rock magazine called Rock UK. I want this magazine to be based in the UK as it seems the UK has a bigger music range with more new up and coming bands which could feature in my magazine. My magazine is targeted at 16-30 year old men and women. The image that I get of my target audience would be someone who likes spending time with friends and doesnt really care what people think of them.

My double page spread

This is my DPS. I wantedto have two different parts to my magazine. The first side is the interview with the band. I made up the name of the band as well as take the photo of the group. 'Always never lies' I thought was a name that went really well with the genre of my magazine. The photo that I took was to show all the different members of the band as well as showing off who was more authoritive in the band. I wanted the image to take up most of the page to make it stand out and to show the reader who they were reading about. I made up questions that i thought my target audience would be interested in knowing the answers to. I used the typical column layout for my article which made it look neat and professional.
On the other side of the DPS, i have images of a band I went to see. I tried to use people on the other page that closest resembled them. I wanted to use these images from the concert as they show the fun side of the band as well as what my target audience would like to see if they went to a concert. I used captions throughout which have been said by the band just to add something to the page. I also included a set list so that fans of the band know what sort of songs they played on the night.
I used black, white, red and blue on the pages as these were the colours that I have used throughout the magazine.

My contents page

This was my contents page. I wanted to do a simple layout as well as giving the audience alot of information about the features in my magazine. I got my basic plan from an idea I saw in Rock Sound magazine. They used images as well as captions from articles throughout the page. I did not want to use captions as it would make my page to busy and confusing for the consumer. I included pictures all around my contents page. These pictures were features in my magazine and will help the reader find their way around the magazine alot easier. I used two columns in my contents page as it made it look neat as well as professional. I had features and regulars. Features would be articles that featured only in this magazine and will have something different every week when my magazine is published. The regulars will always be the same and will be featured in every magazine that is published. It was quite a challenge to do this as it was hard to think of things that the readers would want to see every time.
Wanting to include primary images, I went on the internet and found pictures of people that I would like to feature in my magazine and got my friends to pose for them. This was quite a challenge as it was quite hard to get a similar pose and the backgrounds and clothes they were wearing sometimes did not go with the genre of my magazine. I chose mutual colours that worked in with the colours throughout my magazine.

My Front Cover

This was the front cover that I designed as my new media product. My genre that I wanted to do was Rock. I did a big title 'Rock UK' so that any consumers would know what type of magazine it was and that it is specifically targeted at UK music. The main image I used was a recreation of an image I saw of a band on the Internet. I wanted them to have posed look but at the same time act natural. This is shown by the laid back way they are standing as well as the looks on their faces, Doing the image in black and white makes it look more professional as well as making them the main focal point of the magazine cover. At the bottom I wanted to add extra features that were in my magazine to try and draw in my target audience. Seeing people that they can relate to on the cover would make them more likely to pick up my magazine and read it. I added a free CD which stands out on the front cover as it is in bold writing and colours. This convention is used throughout many different magazines and is something that my target audience would want to get.

The colours that I chose are used throughout my whole magazine. I did a survey which was distributed to people who I thought fitted my target audience and got an idea of what colours they liked. This gave me an idea for which one to make the main colours in my magazine.

My Pre-lim Task

This was my first task that I did when creating a new media product. I found it hard to do this as there werent any school magazines on the market that i could compare my ideas with. When I first started this I did not think much about my planning and research which therefore lead me to mkaing up ideas on the spot. When I look back at things that I could have done differently, I could have done a survey which could have been passed out throughout the school. I used a very basic layout as I did not think much about how I could attract my target audience and what they would want to see on a front cover.
